PALB2 Mutation: Increasing Breast Cancer Risk
A new study published on August 7th from the New England Journal of Medicine found that mutations in a gene called PALB2 can dramatically increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer. The risk is almost as high as BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. Join this important conversation and get informed with Breast Cancer Answers Medical Director Dr. Jay Harness and Genetic Counselor +Kimberly Banks as they discuss this mutated PALB2 gene that may increase your risk of developing breast cancer. Women who carry the PALB2 mutation have a one in three chance of developing breast cancer by the age of 70. The risk for women younger than 40 with PALB2 mutation was eight to nine times as high as that of the general population. Risk is even higher for women with a family history of breast cancer. The risk would go up to about six in 10 by the age of 70 if a mutation carrier has a strong family history. Watch this video and learn more about the PALB2 Mutation.
