Assembling Langley white metal kits with solder¦ my first ever try [Horses for courses]

In need of some horse power for my pre-grouping videos, it's time to make up some white metal kits This has been brought to my attention and I feel duty bound to bring it to yours. I’m still seeking verification but I am confident in the data reviewed so far and feel a warning is warranted for my viewers. Langley have confirmed that their kits don't contain Cadmium. A warning regarding soldering and working with white metal and low melting point solder. This is not a kill joy statement but a researched concern that I am duty bound to bring to my viewers. 70 degree low melting point solder, may well contains cadmium! (check before you buy) This element is toxic! More to the point carcinogenic and an extreme permanent neuro toxin! The solder must not be heated above 250C (when it contains Cadmium) and ideally the temperature of the solder should be kept down to 120C, this ensures the Cadmium is not released into the air. White metal and LMP solder nowadays is regulated but it was not back in the day! So working with older materials may require precautions! White metal kits are/were generally made up of varying quantities of antimony, lead, cadmium, tin, bismuth and zinc and so are less than environmentally friendly! You should always wash your hands after building kits with white metal, as the trace additives are all heavy metals including arsenic and other not-nice elements. White metal dust should be regarded as hazardous! A bit of research will show that the above warning is valid and well meant. We can still enjoy our hobby but need to be informed and safe and take precautions.
