I Was Not A Machine (Cold Archival Chamber)

"I Was Not a Machine" is about a woman turned into an image by the men who named, desired, painted, bought, staged, and wrote her. Cold, detached, and almost spoken, it lets her read the record back. The song is inspired by Edward Said’s reading of Flaubert’s encounter with Kuchuk Hanem, and by the wider Western archive that turned “Oriental women” into flowers, dolls, butterflies, brides, and machines.
