Craiova aromânilor: orașul construit prin donații
This documentary is a broad journey through Craiova for the Aromanians, a history told at a leisurely pace, through cemeteries, churches, neighborhoods, palaces and institutions that still define the city. Together with historian Alexandru Gica, we follow the traces left by the Aromanian community in Craiova, from the beginning of the 19th century to the interwar period and beyond. The tour begins symbolically in the Sineasca cemetery, the resting place of personalities who have decisively marked the cultural, economic and administrative life of the city. Here we are talking about Alexandru Aman, the brother of the painter Teodor Aman, an elite magistrate and great donor, the man who left Craiova the library that bears his name and the art collection that will form the basis of the Pinacoteca and the Art Museum. His donations, made together with his wife, Aristia, are the expression of a deep Aromanian tradition: responsibility towards the community. Also in the cemetery we discover the monuments of the Glogoveanu, Carada and other fundamental names for the history of modern Romania. Eugeniu Carada, one of the architects of the National Bank, is presented not only as a historical figure, but as an expression of an Aromanian mentality: discretion, rigor, work and long-term construction. The documentary continues in the city, where architecture tells stories as powerful as documents. We find the great Aromanian architect Dimitrie Maimarolu, then Constantin Ioțu, author of some emblematic buildings of Craiova, but also his son, Alexandru Ioțu, the creator of one of the most modern theaters in Europe at the time of its construction. Each building becomes a testimony to the integration of the Aromanians into the Romanian urban elite. A central chapter of the film is dedicated to the Clisurean neighborhood, one of the largest urban Aromanian colonies in the world. We learn how, almost 200 years ago, approximately 90 families from Vlahoclisura chose Craiova as a strategic point on the great trade routes between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg Empire. Through work, seriousness and solidarity, these people reached, in a few decades, the economic and administrative core of the city. Families, houses, churches and destinies are presented: Gârlesteanu, Orman, Corneti, Cocu, Pesica, Goga, Coculescu and many others. We learn stories about schools, institutes, banks, foundations and donations that shaped modern Craiova. The Cornetti Music School, supported by Elefterie Cornetti and his wife Elena, is a rare example of cultural philanthropy, with echoes as far as Paris and Tetovo. A highlight of the documentary is the Craiova Art Museum, the former palace of the Mihail family, the richest Aromanian family in Oltenia. The story of Dinu Mihail and the legacy left to the Romanian state is told in detail: a combination of vision, risk, education and social responsibility. Here the threads are connected again: the Aman donation, the Mihail Palace, the history of Romanian art and the great political moments, including the Treaty of Craiova of 1940, signed in this very building. The documentary naturally ends, also in a cemetery – at the graves of the Cornetti and Mihail families – underlining the idea that runs through the entire film: death is equal for all, but memory is built by what you leave behind. And the Aromanians of Craiova left schools, museums, libraries, buildings, institutions and a lesson in solidarity that is worth knowing. This is not just a documentary about Aromanians. It is a documentary about how a city is built. #Craiova#Aromanians#RomanianAromanians#HistoryofCraiova#CraiovaArtMuseum#AlexandruAman #TeodorAman#ClisureanNeighborhood#RomanianHistory#HistoricalDocumentary#Giuclea#RomanianHeritage#HistoricalFamilies#RomanianCulture 📌 𝐍𝐮 𝐮𝐢𝐢𝐚𝐢𝐢: 👍 Like if you liked it, 💬 Write to us in the comments what impressed you the most, 🔔 Subscribe for more stories from the history of Romania!
