There are beautiful guitars. Then there are true legacy pieces that transcend what they are as a piece of wood or how they play and become a cultural icon. My journey to find THE EXACT guitar used for the Iconic 1982 / 1983 "American-Made, World-played" Ad and subsequent promotions has finally come to an end and it was hidden in the most obvious of locations this whole time. Why did I want THIS EXACT guitar? Well... quite simply, it is probably one of the most notable Gibson guitars in history. EVERYONE who knows anything about Gibson has run into this guitar at some point and casual people get drawn in by the unique shape. It is THE map guitar after all - hard to forget! What the casual viewer might not have realized, the one used in the promo photo is significantly different from what Gibson offered for sale. A cool feature to me was the stop bar tailpiece and bridge instead of the wrap tail that most of them got - but most important was the toggle switch up by Maine instead of by California or Texas. This one also had binding among other things that make it special. This was the only map guitar made like this. In November 2022... my trek came to an end. I waited until July 4, 2023 to share the tale! I Found The PROTOTYPE Used in This Iconic Photo! | 1982 Gibson USA Map Guitar Review, History + Demo. UPDATE: It has been found that in October of 2022 the family of James Hutchins took these prototype guitars into "Nashville Fretworks Guitar Repair & Restoration" to have Florida repaired on the "prototype" and additional work done to the "poster child" just before they took them to Carter Vintage Guitars. Apparently, Poster Child was never finished at the factory, as-in, never wired up. There was never even a route to connect all the wires to the control cavity so this route was added at this time and likely the additional routes in the toggle switch cavity. This explains why the drill run looked so "bad" in comparison to the rest of the routes and confirms my suspicions of the back plates being added at a later date. At the time of the 1982 photo, it wasn't a functional guitar and it never was until 2022! This certainly explains why the solder work looked so clean + fresh! I'm happy these mods were done to it before I got it... otherwise, it never would've been done!
