News January 12, 1991. Soviet military cracks dow on Lithuania.
In Lithuania the Soviet Union's military continues to suppress independence attitude in the breakaway republic. Russian Republic leader Boris Yeltsin condemns the Soviet military action and says it could unleash wide scale civil conflict. The Soviet military took over railroads halting service and stopped air service in Lithuania. The Soviet Military arrested Lithuanian police cadets and ransacked police buildings. Lithuanians silently protested at key government buildings, demanding independence form the Soviet Union.
