When finished the design was seen as too small and work on blueprints for an engine for a bigger scale were soon to be created, those being for the E2. Thomas was left unused after trial until being sent up for war. Thomas being an E2 has been perplexing fans for a while, as it is HUGE, even for a tank engine, and Thomas is not. However, Thomas overcoming his small size is a theme throughout the whole franchise, and so reflecting that, Thomas ends up being more useful than the engines who were bigger than him, as the E2’s were seen as pretty unsuccessful.
