Aparecida is a Brazilian municipality in the interior of the state of São Paulo, in the Southeast region of the country. It is located in the Vale do Paraíba Paulista, northeast of the state capital, about 170 km away. It occupies an area of ​​121.076 km², of which 5.7 km² are in the urban perimeter, and its population in 2019 was 36,157 inhabitants. The city is popularly known as Aparecida do Norte due to the construction of the Estrada de Ferro do Norte (later Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil) in the second half of the 19th century. The origins of the municipality date back to the faith consolidated around the discovery of the image of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of Aparecida in the course of the Paraíba do Sul River by fishermen in 1717. The miracles attributed to the representation led to the construction of a chapel in 1745, around which several faithful and the first residents settled. Given the development of the locality, in 1842 the parish was created, subordinate to Guaratinguetá, a municipality from which Aparecida separated on December 17, 1928. The growing number of faithful led to the construction of a larger temple, the current Old Basilica, which was inaugurated in 1888 and replaced by the new Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida in the second half of the 20th century. This is the largest religious pilgrimage center in Latin America, receiving millions of visitors every year, making the city one of the main tourist centers in Brazil. The Aparecida tourist complex also includes landmarks such as Porto Itaguaçu, which marks the place where the image of Our Lady was found; the Bom Jesus Missionary Seminary; Morro do Cruzeiro, with its sculptures representing the Stations of the Cross; and the São Benedito Church, inaugurated in 1918.
