Porque La Banda de un Auto Hace Ruido "Chilla"

Do you know why car belts make a squealing noise? Here are the main causes. The engine belt makes a noise because it slips, and it can be due to several reasons. One is belt crystallization. Over time, heat, water, and other environmental agents cause the belt's material to lose elasticity and traction, causing it to slip on the pulleys. The belt slipping on the pulley not only causes discomfort due to the noise, but it can also leave the battery uncharged because it's not charging the alternator, or it can also reduce the cooling capacity due to the lack of traction on the compressor. If the belt has lost this elasticity, the only option is to replace it. This can be a little more complex due to the engine's tensioning method, but a workshop can do it at a low cost. Tread crystallization can be noticeable on tires: the rubber shows cracks, lacks flexibility, and doesn't return to its natural state if removed, leading one to conclude that it's old. Before rushing to buy a tread and going to the shop for a replacement, you can try a few tricks. Another cause of tread slippage is oil. If, when you put oil in your engine or hydraulic oil in the steering or brakes, fluid gets on the tread and causes loss of traction. In this case, what you can do is wash the tread with detergent to remove any adhering fluid. You should wait for it to dry as much as possible before starting the engine. It's also recommended to sand the tread. You can use metal sandpaper, sanding both the outer and inner sides of the tread. Some mechanics do this with the engine running so the entire tread passes through the sandpaper, but this isn't recommended because you could lose your fingers when passing over the pulley. Belt tension is important. It shouldn't be too little, as it could slip on the pulleys, but it shouldn't be too much, as it could damage the pulley bearings. Test the belt tension by pressing on the longest stretch between the pulleys. If you notice more than 10 cm of slack or it bounces when you release it, it's too loose. If, on the other hand, it doesn't drop at all when you put your finger on it, it's too tight. If you're unsure of the tension, ask a friend to look at their engine and compare the tension. If you're still not sure, it's best to rely on the experience of a mechanic. The first step is to identify which belt is making the noise. If your vehicle squeals as soon as you start the engine and before you touch the steering wheel, it's the alternator belt. If the noise occurs when you turn the steering wheel, examine the power steering belt. If your vehicle has a single belt (called the serpentine belt), this is the one you need to work with. If you just replaced the serpentine belt and it still squeals, it needs to be broken in. All new belts stretch for the first few days and usually need to be taken to a mechanic's shop to be retensioned. Some belts can't be retensioned because the vehicles have a tensioning spring, and in that case, the spring must be replaced. A quick check to distinguish whether it's the belt and not the bearings is to place a couple of drops of brake fluid on it while the engine is running; the belt will immediately quiet down. Do not use oil-based products. If the noise is continuous or smoke is coming from one of the pulleys, see your mechanic IMMEDIATELY; that component has a SERIOUS problem and you need professional help. A used bar of soap works well; brush or slide a piece of bar soap on the belt, or purchase a belt lubricant.
