DANIEL - La escritura en la pared | Capítulo 5

King Belshazzar of Babylon threw a grand feast. In the midst of all the revelry, an event occurred that brought all the festivities to an immediate halt. A mysterious hand appeared and, with letters of fire, wrote a chilling message on the wall of the king's palace. Suddenly, the crowd at the feast fell silent. They were astonished. As they watched, a hand appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, and began to write with fiery letters on the wall. The people watched in amazement as the writing gradually formed words. But no one could read the message, so no one knew what it meant. Then Daniel read and interpreted what was written on the wall. These are the interpretations of each word: "MENE: God has numbered your kingdom and brought it to an end. TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balances and found wanting. PERES: Your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians." - Daniel 5:26-28 That very night, October 12, 539 BC, while Belshazzar and his friends were feasting, the enemy attacked. Ancient historians Herodotus and Xenophon record that the river was low after the hot summer, and the invaders cleverly lowered it even further by diverting some of the water. The Persian soldiers waded through the current, which now only reached their knees. When they arrived at the mighty river gates, they found them unguarded and wide open. Just as Isaiah’s prophecy had foretold almost 200 years earlier, Cyrus took the city of Babylon with hardly a fight. And that very night, King Belshazzar lost his life and his kingdom. It is no wonder that when Daniel first appeared before the drunken king, he did not bother with the customary greeting for the king, “O king, live forever!” When Daniel read the writing on the wall, he knew the king would soon die, and that is exactly what happened. Here is the biblical account: “That very night Belshazzar, king of the Chaldeans, was killed. And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being sixty-two years old.” - Daniel 5:30-31 The kingdom of Babylon came to an end that very night. Belshazzar was the last of the Babylonian monarchs. A new king, Darius the Mede, ascended the throne. The Greek historian Xenophon confirms the biblical account and tells us why Belshazzar died. On a hunting trip years earlier, Nabonidus, the chief king of Babylon, had killed the son of Gobryas, who was now the commander of the troops that overthrew the city that fateful night. In revenge for his son’s death, Gobryas killed Nabonidus’ son, Belshazzar. Shortly afterward, Cyrus the Great led his army through the streets of Babylon, where they were greeted by jubilant crowds grateful for the end of the tyranny of the fallen kingdom. Darius the Mede ruled the city for a little over a year, until his death, and then Cyrus became king of the Medes and Persians, just as biblical prophecy had foretold.
