The entire archipelago, and in particular Ponza, at that time verdant with lush Mediterranean scrub, later became Roman dominion. The islands were then the scene of many occupations and were often used as a real place of segregation. Agrippina the younger and her sister Livilla were exiled on the island after attempting a conspiracy against the Roman emperor Caligula. Flavia Domitilla, a relative of Domitian, had the same fate, following a persecution against Christians. Left uninhabited due to the Saracen and Turkish incursions, it was repopulated starting from 1700 with settlers of Ischian origin first, and then more generally from Campania. The fascist regime relegated there many politicians opposed to the dictatorship.
