Pawns - Brimstone And Fire - Live

PAWNS - BRIMSTONE AND FIRE Shot at 5 Star Bar, Los Angeles 8/7/2017. This New York city outfit I was unfamiliar with until I saw them on this night. they came as a recommendation from a good friend and I'm glad I did. I came in a little late but right away I could feel the power and energy in that crowded room. I hadn't seen the embodiment or rather the spirit of what I would consider Anarcho punk in quite sometime. Even down to the artwork, shirts, album covers, posters and fliers. All designed by the singer Gage Allison. The aesthetic immediately makes you think of Crass, The Mob, or Flux of Pink Indians. Gage has said as much on his early influences and the shape of his political beliefs. Even the name, Pawns, carries with it his introspection on thoughts about free will, from a sociological standpoint, and the messages he is trying to carry and present in his lyrics. Gage is a great front man. His energy, theatrics, and as at times baritone-like bravado play out to a terrific stage presence. Jenna Rose is certainly an interesting presence on bass. She once cited Tracy Pew, of Birthday Party, as an influence and I can certainly see a kind of almost manic wickedness that reveals echoes of his ghost. Noel Mateus , on guitar, reminds me of early Geordie walker of Killing Joke. Stephen reader, the current drummer, does a fine job of tying them together.
