Centre Issues Notice to Telegram, Seeks Action Against Film & OTT Piracy Within 15 Days

The Centre has asked Telegram to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within 15 days, detailing the measures taken to stop copyright violations and tackle piracy on the platform. According to the source report, thousands of Telegram channels have allegedly been sharing pirated copies of newly released films and web series, causing significant losses to the film industry, broadcasters, OTT platforms, producers and distributors. The government has taken the step under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, signalling a shift towards greater platform accountability in tackling digital piracy. The report further states that if Telegram fails to take effective action against piracy channels within the stipulated 15-day period, the Centre may consider further action. The move is aimed at protecting India's creator economy and the entertainment industry from large-scale copyright infringement.
