The spectacular salvage of the Costa Concordia cost eight hundred million dollars and was the largest rescue operation in maritime history. In January 2011, Captain Francesco Schettino ran the Costa Concordia aground on a rock off the island of Giglio; 32 people died, and the 14,000-ton wreck lay in the middle of a marine protected area. What followed was a two-and-a-half-year battle against time, nature, and the sheer mass of the ship: thousands of dives, 33,000 tons of steel, a historic parbuckling maneuver, and a final voyage to Genoa, where the largest cruise ship ever scrapped was melted down.
