Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Blinken he would not accept an end to the war in Gaza as part of any hostage deal, and that a planned military operation on the city of Rafah would happen whether there was a cease-fire deal or not. • Biden says order must accompany free speech in campus protests. After weeks of pro-Palestinian protests escalating in universities across the U.S., President Biden warned that order must prevail even as he underscored that dissent is essential for democracy. The protests have become a growing political dilemma for Biden as Republicans accuse him of turning a blind eye to lawlessness and antisemitism while young voters and progressive Democrats are incensed at a police crackdown. • U.S. Commission Highlights China’s Growing Sinicization of Tibetan Buddhism. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom released 2024 annual report on Wednesday highlighting 17 countries with the worst religious freedom violations and persecutions in the world. In addition, it says the governments of China and Russia are among the most active perpetrators of cross-border repression and other malign activities abroad, and that China has intensified its suppression and Sinicization of Tibetan Buddhism. • Safeguarding the Tibetan Language: A Dharamsala Seminar. The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives hosted a crucial seminar on "Preserving and Promoting the Tibetan Language” which brought together translators, educators, and enthusiasts from across the Himalayan region. Geshe Lhakdor highlighted the seminar's goal: to foster exchange of ideas amongst participants on effective strategies for safeguarding the unique Tibetan language. • Association of Tibetan Journalists Marks World Press Freedom Day. The Association of Tibetan Journalists observed World Press Freedom Day in Dharamsala. Tenzin Legshed, the spokesperson for the Central Tibetan Administration, served as the chief guest. ATJ President Kalsang Jimpa highlighted a report by a press freedom organization that under Chinese leadership, no independent journalists operate in Tibet. • Open-source intelligence gives a glimpse of war casualty figures Russia is trying to hide. The number of Russian soldiers killed in combat since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine remains a secret that the Kremlin goes to great lengths to hide.
