For tonight, she is Y.M. The name sits easily enough in the passport hidden beneath the lining of her coat. It is not the name she was born with, and perhaps not the last one she will need. The road to Tijuana runs straight through the desert, pale beneath the moon and empty except for two pairs of headlights. Hers lead the way. The others have kept the same distance for almost three hours. She checks the rear-view mirror without moving her head. Most of what she sees is her own eyes. On the passenger seat lies a small leather bag she has been told not to open. Beside it, a postcard bears the address of a bar in Tijuana. The handwriting on the back is narrow and impatient: Room 7. Midnight. Ask for Ramírez. She does not know Ramírez. She knows only the terms. Collect what is waiting in the room, carry it to a private airfield outside the city, and arrive before sunrise. In return, an old debt disappears. So does the name attached to it. It sounds too generous. Generosity has never found her on a road like this. A voice breaks through the radio static, sings half a line from an old bolero, then vanishes beneath the hiss. Y.M. turns the dial, but finds only fragments: weather reports, laughter, a preacher promising forgiveness to strangers awake after midnight. The border lights begin to stain the horizon. In the mirror, the following car is still there. Then its headlights go out. Y.M. feels no relief.
