Most Kenyans associate bananas with Kisii… but deep in Kenya’s coastal hinterland lies another town quietly feeding the country with bananas. In this video, I travel to Taveta — a small town in Taita Taveta County near the Kenya–Tanzania border — to explore its growing banana farming culture, beautiful landscapes, and unique farming environment. We begin in the heart of Taveta town, exploring the streets, matatu stage, and everyday life before driving through the smooth tarmacked roads leading out into the vast banana farms. Along the way, we discover the swampy terrain that makes this region unique, including the trenches farmers dig to drain excess water and protect their crops. The journey also showcases the stunning mountainous landscapes along the Kenya–Tanzania border, the open spaces beyond the plantations, and the vibrant border market area connecting communities from both countries.
