Dive into the complete story of Maba Diakhou Bâ, a legendary figure of 19th-century Senegambia, in this immersive historical documentary that retraces his destiny — from Nioro du Rip to the Battle of Somb (Fandane-Thiouthioune, 1867), the last great confrontation between Islamic faith and Africa’s ancestral traditions. Born in Nioro du Rip in 1809, Maba Diakhou Bâ, the son of the marabout Ndiogou Bâ, embodied the spiritual and intellectual revival of pre-colonial Senegal. Trained in the Malikite school of law (fiqh), he became both a scholar and a reformer, advocating for a society built on justice, knowledge, and discipline. From the 1850s onward, he unified the villages of the Rip and Saloum, built a state founded on Qur’anic law and social mediation, and rose against the ceddo kings, defenders of custom and feudal power. But Senegambia was a cauldron of turmoil — marked by political tension, Mandinka wars, and the growing pressure of French colonial expansion. Under the blessing of El Hadj Oumar Tall, Maba became Almamy of the Rip, both religious and political leader. He rallied major figures such as Lat Dior Ngoné Latyr Diop, the Damel of Cayor, and Alboury Ndiaye of Djolof, forging a historic alliance to resist colonization. Together, in 1865, they confronted Governor Émile Pinet-Laprade in the Battle of Pathé Badiane, where the Rip’s troops repelled the French forces. This victory symbolized the birth of an independent African state, administered according to Malikite Islamic law, with written registers, fair taxation, and codified justice — a first in the region. But in 1867, destiny took a darker turn. A raid against the Kingdom of Sine, ruled by Maad a Sinig Kumba Ndoffene Famak Joof, triggered an all-out war. Two worlds collided: ➡️ The Sine, a proud Serer kingdom faithful to its traditions, its pangool spirits, and its spiritual autonomy; ➡️ The Rip, a reformed nation driven by faith, justice, and religious order. On July 18, 1867, in the marshes of Somb (Fandane-Thiouthioune), the decisive battle began. Maba Diakhou Bâ, holding the Qur’an to his chest, faced the Serer army in an epic duel of faith and heritage. Surrounded by his companions — Lat Dior, Alboury Ndiaye, Mama Gaolo Nyang — he fought until the final prayer. The Rip collapsed, but Maba’s light never died. His body disappeared, his head became legend, and Nioro du Rip was transformed into a sanctuary of learning and memory. More than 150 years later, his legacy still lives on: 🕌 At Nioro, the spiritual heart of Senegal, his descendants continue to spread his teachings. 🌙 At Mbel Fandane, a mausoleum honors the martyr of the Rip. 📖 In every Quranic school, his name reminds the students that justice must always precede conquest. This documentary tells the story of the greatness, faith, war and legacy of a man who sought to reconcile the Qur’an and the city, knowledge and power, Africa and dignity. 🎥 Other videos to discover: 📺 Lat Dior: The Only Senegalese King Who Humiliated the French Army Multiple Times! 👉    • Lat Dior : le seul roi sénégalais qui a hu...   Discover the fate of the Damel of Cayor, hero of Senegal’s resistance and historic ally of Maba Diakhou Bâ in the struggle for African dignity. 📺 El Hadj Oumar Tall: The Peul Marabout Who Transformed West Africa 👉    • El-Hadj Oumar Tall : le marabout peulh gue...   Follow the life of a scholar-turned-conqueror, founder of a spiritual and political empire that reshaped the landscape of 19th-century West Africa. 👉 If you believe in African documentaries that tell our history differently, like, comment, subscribe and share this video. #MabaDiakhouBa #HistoryOfSenegal #AfricanDocumentary #LatDior
