SONGWRITING ADVICE FOR BANDS - WHEN SINGERS ATTACK #103

How do you write songs? Who writs the top line lyrics & melody? Most demo's I get from bands just don't have a good enough top line melody and many have meaningless or cheesy lyrics and if those are arguably the most important aspects of the song. So why is it that most singers in bands feel like their responsibility is to write the lyrics and melody? When an amazing singer has put so much effort into their voice, as well as their image to front the band, why does that mean they also have the skill to write powerful or meaningful lyrics and on top of that to then be a top line melody writer! It's just so much to ask so why not take a step back as a band and decide which area you want to get help with. Bringing in songwriters, melody writers or even lyricists doesn't mean you are a failure, it means you are a singer, like the bass player or drummer is instrumentalist. Over the years many great bands have completely delegated the lyrics, subject matter and even melodies. Oasis for example where Noel is a songwriter, he might not be able to play shred guitar but it's a tool for his melodies and choruses and so Liam had to take a step back and do what he did best.. be a rockstar! If you are an athlete you don't need to design your shoes! This isn't a problem that occurs from time to time, this is a problem with most young bands and artists trying to build an audience... if you are a singer songwriter you will spend your days learning and evolving your writing, however too many singers cover up their melodies with great vocals and that is not a hit record no matter how great you are as a singer. Look at the hits of Mariah or Witney... They still had amazing melodies to warble over! If you want to improve and get past other bands to be successful, don't fight on the stuff you're not good enough at! Lyrics and Melody writing are too important to just have a go at!
