FIELD TRIP WITH PATRICK BLANC IN WEST PAPUA - ANGGI LAKES, HIGHLAND SAVANNA AND MOSSY FOREST
Filmed and produced by Pascal Héni - PasPat 2025 We follow Patrick Blanc around the Anggi Lakes in the Arfak Mountains, West Papua, at an altitude between 2000 and 2300 m. This area is quite heavily populated since a long time and many forested areas were already converted to highland savannas when Miss Lilian Gibbs studied and collected many species at the turn of the 19th century. These highland savannas are regularly burnt by anthropogenous fires, but they become new refugia for species of open areas often naturally growing at much higher altitudes, belonging to Orchids, Rhododendrons, Vacciniums, Lycopodiums while the mossy forests harbor many strange Southern Conifers like Papuacedrus, Dacrydium and Podocarpus as well as the so beautiful gingers of the genus Riedelia. Many thanks to André Schuiteman for the determination of most Orchids, to Frédéric Danet for many names of Ericaceae, and to Tim Utteridge for the identification of this so strange Halfordia kendack.
