Founded in the 17th century, it became a military and economic powerhouse, thanks to its well-organized army, strategic alliances, and control over trade routes. King Béhanzin, the son of King Glélé, inherited a strong kingdom but one under threat from French expansionism. Refusing to bow to colonial demands, he led a fierce military resistance, employing guerrilla tactics and alliances to protect Dahomey’s sovereignty. ⚔️ THE DAHOMEY WARS: A HEROIC RESISTANCE AGAINST FRANCE When French troops, under General Dodds, invaded Dahomey in 1892, Béhanzin mobilized an army of 15,000 soldiers, including the legendary Dahomey Amazons. 🔹 Battle of Dogba (1892): The first confrontation where Dahomey warriors resisted bravely 🔹 Battle of Abomey (1892): The French launched an assault on Dahomey’s capital 🔹 The Last Charge of the Amazons: The king’s elite female guards fought to the death Despite their bravery, the Dahomey warriors were no match for the firepower of the French artillery and modern weaponry. After months of relentless fighting, Béhanzin was forced to flee north, before being captured and exiled. 🚢 BÉHANZIN’S EXILE: A KING IMPRISONED IN MARTINIQUE After the fall of Dahomey, Béhanzin was captured and exiled to Martinique, where he remained until his death in 1906. Despite being far from home, he never recognized French authorityand continued to embody resistance. His exile is a striking example of how colonial powers sought to break African leaders, yet his name and legacy remain deeply ingrained in history. 🏛️ BÉHANZIN’S LEGACY AND THE RESTITUTION OF DAHOMEY’S LOOTED TREASURES Today, Béhanzin’s fight continues through the battle for the restitution of stolen African artifactslooted by the French. 💎 Béhanzin’s throne, royal statues, and other priceless artifactswere stolen by the French in 1894. 💎 In 2021, France returned 26 treasures of Dahomeyto Benin, marking a symbolic victory for cultural heritage. 💎 Abomey, the former capital, remains a major historical site in Benin and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
