How to Groom an English Bulldog - Bailey
In this video we are grooming an English Bulldog, Bailey. Grooming your dog is usually not difficult if you pay attention to a few key items. The first thing to understand is that it is all in your approach. When your approach is calm and not pushy, you can begin to help your dog get comfortable with being handled. Keep in mind that leading up to actually cutting Bailey's nails and cleaning his ears, we had been practicing "handling" exercises to help Bailey get used to manipulating his paws and ears. When you actually go to cut your dog's nails, the only variable should be the cutting of the nail; everything else should already be familiar to him. The same goes for ears, checking between paw pads, brushing, checking teeth, etc. The issue is that most dogs are not shown handling exercises. Then, when they need their nails cut, there are too many new things (variable) happening that he is not familiar with, which adds to the dog's discomfort. We are using the understanding of obedience commands "place" and "sit" to structure the grooming session for Bailey. We don't tell the dog to "leave it" or "no" or "wrong"! These are haphazard commands. We instead go above and beyond the meaning of those commands with the better understanding of dog's attention on the handler and not the distraction. All commands have a higher level of understanding that goes beyond just the literal meaning of the command and that is Attention. "Structure Equals Freedom!" To get to this stage you must have: Already done handling exercises Lots of Patience Strong "place" & "sit" commands Ability to recognize when your dog gets uncomfortable A can-do attitude Calm demeanor Contact us for more information!
