Approximately 250,000 migrant workers are employed as domestic workers in Lebanon. Most come from Asian and African nations and arrived under the Kafala system, a patronage system that offers them no labor protections or respect for their human rights. In recent months, the country's economic crisis, compounded by the coronavirus pandemic, has worsened the situation for domestic workers. Many have been laid off and are trying to return to their countries of origin, but are unable to do so due to the high cost of tickets, border closures, and some are even stranded because their employers have confiscated their passports.
