La Soltería de John Stott: Don, Servicio e Identidad en Cristo | José de Segovia

#JosédesegoviaBarrón In this ninth episode of Al Trasluz, José de Segovia addresses one of the most discussed and, at times, most misunderstood aspects of John Stott's life: his celibacy. Whenever Stott is mentioned, the question of why he never married inevitably arises. However, this episode shows that John Stott's celibacy should not be understood as an eccentricity, a lack of affection, or a sign of spiritual superiority, but rather as a vocation he discerned over time. José de Segovia explains how Stott never wanted to make his marital status a norm for others, nor to advocate celibacy as if it were a higher Christian state than marriage. On the contrary, he considered it a delicate matter and believed that no one should take vows of celibacy prematurely, especially in their youth. For him, celibacy was a choice that should be gradually revealed before God. The episode also places this issue within the contrast between Catholic and Protestant cultures. In the Hispanic world, historically marked by the relationship between spirituality and religious celibacy, singleness can be understood differently than it is perceived in the Protestant context, where marriage is generally seen as the ordinary state, especially for pastors and church leaders. Using Stott's life as a starting point, José de Segovia also addresses difficult questions about celibacy, his personal situation, self-discipline, Christian service, and the unfair suspicions that often fall upon those who do not fit the usual patterns. The chapter recalls that Stott stated he never took a vow of celibacy and that for years he even considered marriage, but he ultimately came to understand his singleness as part of his particular calling. Stott's singleness allowed him to dedicate an enormous amount of time to traveling, writing, teaching, preaching, and serving on different continents. But this episode also makes it clear that Stott was not an isolated man. He lived surrounded by collaborators, assistants, visitors, students, pastors, and friends. His home, connected to All Souls, was a place of work, hospitality, conversation, study, and service. A key figure in this chapter is Frances Whitehead, Stott’s secretary for decades, affectionately known as “Aunt Frances.” Her role was fundamental to Stott’s life and ministry: correspondence, administration, books, articles, travel, foundations, scholarships, and an immense amount of quiet work that accompanied John Stott’s public ministry. The episode concludes by looking beyond marital status. Single or married, with different struggles, temperaments, or weaknesses, our ultimate identity is not found in marriage, singleness, orientation, ministerial success, or human recognition, but in Christ Jesus. As José de Segovia reminds us, Stott deeply understood that we are what we are by the grace of God, His instruments for His glory. 00:00 Introduction: John Stott's Bachelorhood 01:05 Love, Marriage, and an Inevitable Question 02:15 Stott's Role Model: Bash and the Bible Union 03:40 Bachelorhood as a Choice, Not as a Spiritual Advancement 05:10 Catholic Culture, Protestant Culture, and Celibacy 06:40 When Bachelorhood Raises Suspicions 08:20 Christian Guidance, Practice, and Discipline 10:05 Stott and His Biblical Stance on Homosexuality 11:40 “I Never Made a Vow of Celibacy” 13:10 The Women Who Could Have Attracted Stott 14:35 Bachelorhood Discovered as a Vocation 16:05 Travel, Writing, and Service Without a Family of His Own 17:40 John Stott's Daily Discipline 19:10 Bachelor Boy, Cliff Richard, and Evangelical Bachelorhood 20:40 Stott's Assistants and His Working Life 22:20 A Day Quiet Time for Thinking, Reading, and Writing 24:00 Planning, Preaching, and Resting 25:30 Stott, Travel, and His Love of Birds 27:00 Singleness as a Progressive Gift 28:30 Stott Wasn't Alone: Home, Church, and Visitors 30:00 Frances Whitehead, Stott's Secretary 32:00 “Uncle John” and “Aunt Frances” 34:00 Frances's Conversion and All Souls 36:00 A Life of Quiet Service 38:00 Frances at John Stott's Funeral 39:30 The Person Closest to Stott Until the End 41:00 Stott, Humility, and Christian Service 42:30 “If He Saw Me as I Really Am…” 43:40 Single or Married: Our Identity Is in Christ 44:50 Conclusion: Complete Only in Jesus Christ Series: In the Light Episode: 9/24 Theme: Singleness By John Stott With: José de Segovia Original Production: Dynamis Radio José de Segovia Barrón — Madrid, 1964 — is a professor, journalist, theologian, and pastor of the Reformed Christian Church in the Ciudad Lineal district of Madrid.
