The meditation chamber on Serenno carries the scent of ancient wood and burning incense. Count Dooku stands at the window, watching the sun set over his family's estate, his elegant robes untouched by the breeze filtering through the open balcony. He is older now, distinguished, his beard silver and his bearing that of nobility. But inside, something gnaws at him. The Jedi Order has lost its way. He has seen it for years—the Order's increasing entanglement with the Senate, the way the Council seems more concerned with political maneuvering than the will of the Force. They have become enforcers of the status quo, blind to the rot spreading through the Republic's institutions. The thought turns bitter in his mind as he closes his eyes and reaches out through the Force, searching for clarity that never comes. Behind him, the door opens without a knock. Few would dare such familiarity with a Count, but this visitor is different. Senator Palpatine of Naboo enters with a warm smile, his robes simple but well-tailored, his demeanor that of a concerned friend rather than a political operator. He has been visiting Serenno for months now, ever since their first meeting at a Senate function. Their conversations have ranged from philosophy to politics, from the nature of governance to the failures of the Republic. Palpatine: My dear Count, you seem troubled.. Dooku: The Order I have served my entire life... I’ve come to the conclusion I can no longer serve it in good conscience. Palpatine: (softly) You have seen what I have seen, then. The Jedi Council's corruption. Not of individuals, you understand, but of the institution itself. They have forgotten their purpose. Dooku: They enforce the will of politicians who care nothing for justice. They preach about the Living Force while clinging to dogma that has not changed in a thousand years. Palpatine: Then perhaps it is time for a new order. Not to destroy the Jedi, but to save them. To return them to their true purpose—service to the Force itself, not to corrupt bureaucrats. You have wealth, influence, the respect of many within the Order. And you have something far more valuable: integrity. Dooku considers this. Part of him wants to reject it outright; the Jedi Order has been his life. But at the same time, he cannot deny the truth in Palpatine's words. How many missions has he undertaken that served political ends rather than justice? How many times has the Council made decisions based on maintaining their relationship with the Senate rather than following the will of the Force? Dooku: You suggest I leave the Order? Palpatine: I suggest you create something better. A new order of Force-users, dedicated to the Living Force, free from political entanglement. Use your position as Count of Serenno to establish a sanctuary. There are others who share your concerns. I have heard them whisper in Senate corridors. Jedi who feel stifled by the Council's rigid dogma. Offer them an alternative. The idea takes root. Dooku can see it already—a new order, dedicated to the true principles of the Force. Not rebels, but reformers. Not enemies of the Jedi, but their salvation. Dooku: The Council would see it as betrayal. Palpatine: Let them. You would not be destroying the Jedi—you would be offering them a choice. Those who wish to serve the Force rather than politicians will come to you. And in time, perhaps the Council itself will see the wisdom of your path. Reform often begins with those brave enough to stand apart. Dooku closes his eyes. The decision weighs heavy, but beneath the weight, there is something else—hope. Hope that the Force can be served as it was meant to be. Dooku: I will do it. , on Coruscant, a different conversation unfolds in one of the Temple's meditation gardens. Qui-Gon Jinn stands among the flowering trees, his long hair pulled back, his weathered face showing the strain of recent missions. Across from him, Count Dooku Dooku: Come with me, Qui-Gon. You have always trusted the Living Force above all else. You have clashed with the Council more times than I can count. This is our chance to serve the Force as it was meant to be served. Qui-Gon: You will always have my respect, master. You shaped who I am as a Jedi. But I cannot abandon the Order, not yet. There is still hope for reform from within. #starwars #starwarswhatif #whatif
