After the attacks in Solingen and Aschaffenburg, Friedrich Merz, then CDU leader and opposition leader, still used clear, strong words: against illegal migration, for more deportations, and for a determined fight against Islamism. He presented entire packages of measures at the time. But after the Islamist terrorist attack on Christopher Street Day in Berlin, in which one woman died and 29 people were injured, some seriously, the Chancellor's tone has changed drastically. At the memorial service in the Protestant St. Mary's Church at Berlin's Alexanderplatz, Merz equates the deadly attack with intolerance, exclusion, discrimination – and bad jokes. "Not just an attack like last night's," he says, his voice almost faltering, as he addresses the queer community with "a very personal word." But it gets even more bizarre: The rainbow flag and the Progress Pride flag are lying on the altar. While the attacker wanted to kill as many non-believers as possible and join the Islamic State, Merz focuses on discrimination and "bad jokes." Outside the church, the Chancellor then delivers the expected platitudes: "They want to divide our society," "We are the majority," "Openness and freedom," extremists have "no place in the center." Leftist battle cries and slogans that sound particularly hollow after an Islamist attack. And while Merz fights back tears, the question arises: Is he weeping for the victims—or is he primarily moved by his own actions?
