The Linkwitz-Riley filter is characterized by a -6 dB cutoff frequency. Furthermore, the fourth-order filter shifts the cutoff frequency by 180°. Therefore, when combining the two second-order filters, since each produces a 180° phase shift (the low-pass is negative and the high-pass is positive), the phase difference between the two filters is 360° at the cutoff frequency. This translates to a sum of +6 dB at the crossover frequency. Therefore, since the Linkwitz-Riley filter's crossover frequency starts at -6 dB and the combination of the filters produces a boost of +6 dB, the final response is flat in the crossover region (-6 dB + 6 dB = 0 dB).
