It feels like the new year was just a short while ago, yet somehow it is already June. Last weekend, I had to deal with the monthly inventory count at my weekday job—a task that feels like a trip to hell every single month. I spent several nights fighting with numbers that simply refused to match. To make matters worse, I also had to work on Saturday, which significantly reduced my pearl time. I wrapped up the inventory work around 9 PM on Saturday, did a quick cleaning of my apartment in Osaka, and then headed back to Kobe. On Sunday, I woke up early and worked on this necklace. Normally, it takes about an hour to finish, but this particular thread was going through a rebellious phase and kept me company for two hours instead. After lunch, I spent most of the afternoon running errands all over Kobe and did not return home until evening. I managed some simple photography and editing before making the trip back to Osaka. Last weekend, I had almost no time for pearls. Usually, things fall into a comfortable rhythm: making a piece, photographing it, editing, writing an article, and listing it for sale. Doing so seems to preserve much more of the atmosphere and feeling that surrounded the creation of that particular piece. And speaking of necklaces, this one is Strand C. But I just realized something surprising—I completely skipped over Strand M. I turned M into a necklace last Wednesday, and it has been sitting there ever since, waiting only for photography and listing. Meanwhile, C was made on Sunday and is now threatening to overtake it. The comparison between these two necklaces is fascinating. One has stronger luster but a slightly rougher surface. The other has gentler luster but a more balanced and orderly baroque appearance. It really comes down to a choice between luster and shape. If you truly pursue the question of what kind of pearls you want most, I suspect your own values begin to reveal themselves as well. Even a simple choice like shape versus luster seems capable of revealing a person’s preferences, priorities, and perhaps even a glimpse of their character. Meanwhile, a typhoon is currently approaching Japan. It is now 11:45 PM, and by tomorrow morning the storm is expected to come within about 100 kilometers of us. Part of me thinks, “If work gets canceled, I could spend the day working on pearls.” But for now, I simply hope that no one suffers any damage from the storm. June 2 2026
