Businesses step up as Akawa Butte Fire grows in central Oregon

As the Akawa Butte Fire continues to burn north of Sisters, businesses across central Oregon are balancing uncertainty with community support. The wildfire has burned more than 26,000 acres and is 3% contained, according to the latest fire update. Firefighters continue working on the ground and from the air to strengthen control lines around the fire while facing dry conditions and changing winds. The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office expanded evacuation orders Thursday as fire activity continued to threaten nearby communities. The fire has already forced evacuations, prompted temporary business closures and displaced residents, while businesses outside the evacuation zones are opening their doors to help.
