What Happens When a Nomad Gets Sick? Healing on the Mongolian Steppe | SLICE | FULL DOC
Ogui is a 35-year-old nomadic doctor and livestock herder in the vast Mongolian steppe — a woman caught between two worlds. Born to nomadic herder parents during Mongolia’s communist era, she now raises two young daughters with her husband Bayarmagnaî while navigating the challenges of a rapidly changing country. Since 2011, Ogui has been delivering frontline medical care across the steppe, traveling from camp to camp in her mobile clinic — a traditional yurt outfitted with basic medical supplies and modern tools. Through blizzards, isolation, and rugged terrain, she reaches the most remote communities that hospitals will never see. Ogui belongs to a generation of transition — from communism to democracy, from ancient traditions to the pressures of globalization. As both healer and herder, she’s trying to preserve a thousand-year-old nomadic way of life while guiding it into the 21st century. Her story is a powerful reflection on cultural survival, innovation, and the quiet strength of women on the front lines of change.
