Siem Reap and APOPO visitor center in Cambodia

In January 2025 we spent 5 days in Siem Reap in Cambodia to explore the temples og Angkor. A visit to Angkor Wat has been on my bucket list for years. We also wanted to experience some other places than temples, and found APOPO visitor center to be a cool variety. There we learned that Cambodia's minefields are a result of decades of conflict, with millions of landmines and unexploded ordnance still scattered across the country. The CMAC estimates that there may be as many as four to six million mines and other pieces of unexploded ordnance in Cambodia, with some estimates running as high as ten million mines. These mines were placed by various factions during the Civil War in Cambodia in the 1970s and 1980s. It was interesting to watch how they trained African pouch rats to detect explosives. They could sniff explosives digged down up to a meter below ground.
