The video starts with an immersive walk through Xiaoshan, then aerial views from Hangzhou to Guangzhou. I‘ve transited through airports many times before, but never thought to film. This time, I made up for it. Casual footage by the filmmaker of Masters in the Forbidden City and Every Treasure Tells a Story. ——— Xiaoshan Airport – departure. Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, Zhejiang’s premier aerial gateway. Terminals bustling: travelers dragging suitcases, children running, long queues at security. Announcements loop, mixing with wheel rumbles and children‘s laughter. ——— Takeoff – leaving Hangzhou. Acceleration, nose up, wheels leaving ground. The city shrinks below: roads become threads, buildings become blocks, West Lake becomes a patch of water. Then into the clouds—the world turns white. ——— Above the clouds: another world. Sunlight streams through the window. Clouds spread beneath like an endless white carpet. Occasional gaps reveal mountains and rivers below. Flight time about 2 hours 10 minutes, distance about 1,043 km. ——— Both cities sunny—but here‘s the twist: temperature gap. Hangzhou: 40°C. Guangzhou: 32°C. Surprising? Many assume Guangzhou, with its perpetual summer vibe, must be hotter. But reality differs. In mid‑July 2024, the middle and lower Yangtze region was under strong subtropical high pressure. Hangzhou hit 35°C on July 15, climbing further thereafter. Guangzhou, though farther south, benefits from maritime moderation—it has many hot days, but extreme highs are less pronounced than inland cities. Weather enthusiasts note: Guangzhou‘s heat often comes from typhoon subsidence and easterly winds south of the subtropical high, while Hangzhou, once locked under stable subtropical control, bakes continuously. ——— Before landing, descent begins. Breaking through clouds, the Pearl River Delta unfolds below. Rivers like silver ribbons, fields like green grids, city outlines sharpening. Guangzhou approaches. ——— Baiyun Airport – touchdown. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, China‘s busiest in 2020 with 43.76 million passengers. From above, its terminals nest symmetrically into dense urban fabric. ——— Where do we begin to understand a city? With its airports—walking through Xiaoshan, landing at Baiyun. With its aerial views—glimpsing landscapes from above, the 40°C vs 32°C contrast. With its climate—the subtropical high’s dance, the difference between inland and coast. ——— That day, stepping off the plane in Guangzhou, 32°C breeze greeted me. Remembering Hangzhou‘s 40°C, I thought—Guangzhou, maybe not so hot after all.
