She was a gracious old lady. In the last years of her life, she was somewhat quiet and inconspicuous, but blessed with a unique pride and remarkable defiance. She commanded the sympathy of many. Even during her lifetime, she was a legend for those who knew her well. We're talking about the railway ferry "Theodor Heuss." April 13, 1997, was a rainy Sunday. Dark clouds hung over Rostock-Warnemünde as we drove toward the old train station. Where the ferries to Gedser once departed, silence has now returned. Ships have long since departed from newly built terminals in the port of Rostock. Apart from the old facilities, nothing remains to indicate their former purpose. However, a veteran ship had recently arrived and was lying in the ferry bed. Not to bring passengers or cargo to Scandinavia, but to begin its final journey to the Indian ship graveyard. Peace had returned after a few turbulent days. The "Heuss," no longer a German ship, was technically no longer even called "Heuss," but simply "Theodor," and was spending its final hours in its home territory. After several rumors in recent days that the ship would depart for India, it was finally confirmed this Sunday.
