Luke 1:57-66. 80 ✠ Words from the Gospel According to Saint Luke Elizabeth's time came to give birth, and she gave birth to a son. When her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown such great mercy to her, they rejoiced with her. On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child and wanted to name him after his father, Zechariah. But his mother replied, "No, but he shall be named John." They answered her, "There is no one in your family who bears that name." So they asked his father by signs what he would call him. He called for a tablet and wrote, "John shall be his name." And they were all amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God. And fear fell upon all their neighbors. Throughout the entire hill country of Judea, people talked about all that had happened. And all who heard about it took it to heart and said, "What then will this child become?" For indeed the hand of the Lord was with him. And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the wilderness until the day of his appearance to Israel. This is the word of the Lord.
