Explanation of the Book of Hosea the Prophet, Chapter 2: The Trial of Gomer, the Adulterous Wife, by Father Markos Fawzy, Pastor and Angel of the Church of the Virgin Mary in Ard El Sherka 1 “Say to your brothers, ‘Uncle,’ and to your sisters, ‘Praise be to you.’” 2 Judge your mother, judge her, for she is not my wife and I am not her husband. Let her put away her whoring from her face and her adultery from between her breasts. 3 Otherwise I will strip her naked and make her stand as on the day she was born, and make her like a desert, and make her like a dry land, and kill her with thirst. 4 I will have no mercy on her children, because they are children of adultery. 5 “Because their mother has committed adultery; she who conceived them has done shameful things, for she said, ‘I will go after my friends, who will give me my bread and my water, my wool and my linen, my oil and my drinks.’ 6 Therefore, I will hedge up your way with thorns and build a wall against it, so that you cannot find your paths.” 7 She will pursue her lovers but will not find them; she will seek them but will not find them. Then she will say, “I will go and return to my first husband, for then it was better for me than now.” 8 “She did not know that it was I who gave her grain, wine, and oil, and multiplied her silver and gold, which they dedicated to Baal. 9 Therefore I will return and take my wheat in its season and my new wine in its season; I will strip away my wool and my linen, which were used to cover her nakedness. 10 Now I will expose her nakedness before the eyes of her lovers, and no one will rescue her out of my hand. 11 I will put an end to all her joys, her festivals, her new moons, her Sabbaths, and all her appointed times. 12 I will destroy her vineyard and her fig trees, which she said were her wages given to her by her lovers, and I will make them a thicket, and the wild animals will eat them. 13 I will punish her for the days of Baalim, when she burned incense to them and adorned herself with her necklaces and jewelry, and went after her lovers and forgot me, declares the Lord. 14 “But I will entice her and bring her to the wilderness and treat her kindly. 15 From there I will give her her vineyards, and the Valley of Achor a gateway of hope. There she will sing as in the days of her youth, as on the day she came up out of the land of Egypt. 16 On that day,” declares the Lord, “you will call me ‘my husband,’ and you will no longer call me ‘my husband.’” 17 I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they will never again be spoken of by their names. 18 On that day I will make a covenant with them, with the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the creatures that creep on the ground. I will break the bow, the sword, and war from the earth, and they will lie down in safety. 19 I will betroth you to myself forever. I will betroth you to myself in righteousness and justice, in love and compassion. 20 I will betroth you to myself in faithfulness, and you will acknowledge the Lord. 21 “On that day I will answer,” declares the Lord, “I will answer the heavens, and they will answer the earth. 22 And the earth will answer the grain, the new wine, and the oil; they will answer Jezreel.” 23 “I will sow them for myself in the land, and I will show compassion to Lo-ruhamah; and I will say to Lo-ammi, ‘You are my people,’ and he will say, ‘You are my God.’” Hosea 23:1-2
