Herstellung von hölzernen Schieferschindeln - a guide on producing wooden "Schiefer" shingles (2018)

Various forms of wooden shingles were common in Austria for a long time as a traditional roofing method. Due to their special laying method, it is possible to produce slate shingles from spruce. The staggered structure of the covering ensures good ventilation of the roof cladding and thus rapid drying of the shingles after a rain event. This form of roofing was typical in Western Styria. The artisans of the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing still master this roofing technique and use it to preserve the museum objects in their original state.
