This is a significant development for home networks moving forward, because all of the major router manufacturers like Linksys, TP-Link, Netgear, Google, and Ubiquiti all make their routers in foreign countries. The press release cited cybersecurity concerns with foreign-made routers, and as a result they have determined that being able to control the manufacturing of routers is critical to United States security and the economy. So, what does this mean for you? Essentially, it means that any new routers made overseas will not get FCC approval to be sold in the USA. In other words, you shouldn’t expect to see any new routers hitting the shelves in the short-term. It’s important to note that security updates are still permitted on any foreign-made routers that are currently authorized by the FCC until March 1, 2027. This means you essentially have until that time to determine what to do with your router. On top of this, manufacturers that make their routers overseas have the opportunity to submit for a conditional approval that would allow them to continue selling routers. The FCC’s press release was just issued so there are currently no manufacturers with conditional approval, but this will change as applications are submitted to the government. I’m sure there will be many moving parts in the coming months as manufacturers get conditional approval to continue selling routers in the United States, and some manufacturers will undoubtedly start manufacturing routers in the United States so they can get FCC approval as well. So at this point, just hold tight and don’t make any rash decisions when it comes to the router in your home network.
