RESCUE: ABANDONED MERCEDES UNIMOG 416 BACKHOE — Saving A German Off-Road Legend 🚜🔧 Welcome back to Expo Restoration! In this episode, we take on one of our most ambitious and challenging projects yet — a Mercedes Unimog 416 backhoe, abandoned and left to rot in the middle of a dense forest. The Unimog 416 is a true off-road legend. Introduced in 1965 as the first long-wheelbase variant of the popular Unimog 406[reference:0], the 416 was produced from 1963 until 1989, with over 45,000 units sold worldwide[reference:1]. These go-anywhere workhorses served in countless roles — from agricultural and forestry work[reference:2] to military service in the Bundeswehr[reference:3], from aid convoy vehicles to rail-road specifications and even patient transport ambulances[reference:4]. This particular 416 came equipped with a Schaeff backhoe attachment[reference:5], making it a true multi-purpose machine capable of tackling the toughest jobs. But years of abandonment in the forest had taken their toll — buried under vegetation, seized hydraulics, and a 5.7-litre six-cylinder OM352 diesel engine[reference:6][reference:7] that hadn't turned over in years.
