GABA reduces the excitability of nerve cells (neurons) in the brain, which play a role in seizures and the transmission of pain signals. Gabapentin mirrors the effects of GABA, calming excited neurons, and is part of the class of medications called anticonvulsants. This medication was originally used as a muscle relaxant and antispasmodic. However, it was later discovered to have the potential as an anticonvulsant medication and can be used as an adjunct to more potent anticonvulsants. It has also been shown to be beneficial in controlling certain types of nerve pain and psychiatric disorders. As its applications expand, there is a growing demand in various fields such as psychiatry, neurology, anesthesiology, and other relevant specialties. The most common side effects of gabapentin are related to central nervous system depression, sedation, and dizziness.
