Last March, Ms. A visited her alma mater in Buyeo-gun, South Chungcheong Province, drank alcohol, and checked into a nearby motel alone. She fell asleep while heavily intoxicated, but someone broke into her room and committed a sexual crime against her. I thought I might be killed if he found out I was awake, so I kept pretending to be asleep...] As soon as the man left the room, Ms. A immediately reported the sexual crime to the police. The police arrested the perpetrator on the spot, and it turned out to be none other than the owner of the motel. The court sentenced the owner, who was brought to trial, to six years in prison and ordered him to complete 40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program. The court stated in its sentencing rationale that severe punishment was necessary because the nature of the crime was extremely heinous, and despite the victim suffering from extreme trauma, the defendant consistently offered implausible excuses. This lodging establishment is located only about 700 meters away from Ms. A's alma mater. It is reported that college students frequent the place because it is only a two-minute drive away. There have been previous incidents of sexual offenses against guests at lodging establishments. In 2021, an employee at a motel in Seoul broke into a guest room and sexually assaulted a guest. It was revealed that the employee committed the crime again during their probation period while working at the motel, despite having been convicted of a sexual offense. Legal experts pointed out that stronger measures, such as employment restrictions, are needed against sexual offenses against guests, given that lodging industry workers can enter guest rooms if they so choose.
