A Patriot's Spirit in Building a Temple—Xie Xiaosi and Hanshan Temple Every visitor entering Hanshan Temple is immediately struck by the yellow-walled, black-tiled screen wall, where the three characters "Hanshan Temple" are written in vigorous, upright regular script. This is no ordinary inscription, but the handwriting of Tao Junxuan, a renowned calligrapher of the late Qing Dynasty. Even fewer people know that the bluestone that made this screen wall the "face" of Hanshan Temple was discovered in the soil of the temple's backyard. From its discovery to its final embedding in the wall, it was all facilitated by a man whom the people of Suzhou called a "patriot from afar." This act bound Tao Junxuan's calligraphy to Hanshan Temple, and also left the initial imprint on his lifelong bond with this ancient temple. This "patriot from afar" was Xie Xiaosi, a native of Guiyang, Guizhou.
