The city of Taza was established around a fort built by the Mances Berber tribes in the tenth century to cut off the road from the east. Its strategic location, between the Rif Mountains and the Atlas Mountains, made it a distinguished military site and a main road linking the western and eastern sides of Morocco. The city of Taza existed long before Islam entered Morocco, and it began to gain importance during the Idrisid era, as it would become one of the most important capitals at that time after it was just a small village. The development of Taza did not take long, thanks to its capabilities, qualifications and geographical location at the crossroads between eastern and western Morocco. Its crossing was necessary for those coming from the east so that they could reach the rest of Morocco, especially Fez, Meknes and the Atlantic front. The Romans and Arabs coming from the East took it as a passage to enter North Africa, as did the Almohads who took it as a location for their weapons around the year 1132. And with the advent of the era of protection and starting from the year 1920, the new city was established with its wide streets lined with buildings, which was called Lower Taza because it is at a lower altitude than the Old City or Upper Taza.
