CHOO CHOO, THE STORY OF A LITTLE ENGINE WHO RAN AWAY, by Virginia Lee Burton, was published in 1937 by Houghton Mifflin Company. Choo Choo is a beautiful black engine, who is loved by Jim, her engineer, Oley, her fireman, and Archibald, her conductor. They take good care of the little train as she takes people, baggage and mail from the station in the little town to the big station in the big city (San Francisco in the 1930s). But Choo Choo thinks to herself how grand it would be to just be on her own and not have to pull her carriages back and forth. So, she runs away.
