Poor air quality prompts cancellations, closures across Western New York
Monroe County Executive Adam Bello announced the Seneca Park Zoo and all county-owned parks were closed Thursday amid poor air quality. Canadian wildfire smoke drifting across the Northeast and Midwest U.S. drove the Air Quality Index up to the "very unhealthy" designation. The closure includes county-owned golf course, as well as the Ontario Beach Park swim area and spray park. The Movies in the Park event scheduled for Thursday night at ESL Ballpark was canceled. Bello said county employees who typically work outdoors have been given indoor tasks, with zoo staff bringing as many animals as possible indoors. He also said crews from the county's transportation and environmental services departments would be ready to respond to emergency situations. The county said it would "continue to review air quality index (AQI) forecasts on a daily basis and make decisions about whether or not to close certain county facilities based on those forecasts and continuous monitoring." Meanwhile, the City of Rochester closed its outdoor pools, spray parks, Durand Eastman Beach and the Party in the Park concert scheduled for Thursday — advising residents to stay inside. City recreation centers and libraries remained open for indoor activities, including swimming at the Trenton and Pamela Jackson R-Center on North Clinton Avenue.
