Gesundheitliche Ungleichheit: Hintergründe und Folgen - Leopoldina Lecture vom 20.10.2020
Life expectancy in Germany is rising – but not for everyone. People with less education and lower incomes die years earlier than those with a comparatively high social status. The 17th Leopoldina Lecture, held on October 20th in Herrenhausen, addressed whether and how this could be changed: https://www.volkswagenstiftung.de/ver.... Life expectancy in Germany has risen steadily in recent decades. Reasons for this include improvements in social and labor policies and the population's access to a high-performing healthcare system. However, a key indicator of life expectancy is a person's social status. People with a comparatively low income, a low occupational position, and less education die years earlier than those who are better off socially – and they also suffer more frequently from chronic illnesses and other health problems. There is a proven link between low socioeconomic status and an increased risk of contracting the coronavirus. Why is this the case, and what can be done about it? The 17th Leopoldina Lecture aimed to take a nuanced look at the underlying causes of health inequality in Germany and to discuss possibilities for prevention.
