His pen name was a play on the name of the novelist Edgar Allan Poe. He was active from the Taisho to Showa periods, primarily specializing in mystery novels. He also worked as a critic, researcher, and editor, mainly in the field of mystery novels. The Edogawa Ranpo Prize, established with his donation, became a stepping stone for mystery writers, and he had a significant influence on later generations.
