How Ancient Humans Could Have Evolved Differently?
At least six different human species — every ancient human on Earth — once shared this planet at the exact same time. They were just as smart, just as capable, and in some cases far stronger than us. So why are we the only ones left? The answer is not the one most people expect — and it rewrites almost everything you thought you knew about human evolution, survival, and what it actually means to win. In this video, we trace the real story of ancient history through the genetics, fossils, and hard evidence that keep forcing scientists to revise their assumptions. A single child's finger bone pulled from a Siberian cave in 2008 revealed an entirely unknown branch of humanity — the Denisovans — erased so completely that we rediscovered them from a single knuckle. Ancient DNA analysis shows that Neanderthals built reliable stone tools for a quarter of a million years, cared for their wounded, and buried their dead long before modern humans ever set foot in their territory. And a 160,000-year-old jawbone found by a Buddhist monk on the Tibetan Plateau confirms that Denisovans were thriving at altitude over a hundred thousand years before our species dared to settle there. In this video, we discuss: The Denisovan Discovery (2010): A research team led by Svante Pääbo at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology sequenced the genome of a finger bone fragment from Denisova Cave in Russia's Altai Mountains, revealing a genetically distinct human population previously unknown to science. Shanidar 1 — Evidence of Neanderthal Care: Excavated by Ralph Solecki of Columbia University between 1957 and 1961, the Shanidar 1 skeleton from the Zagros Mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan shows a Neanderthal man who survived for years with a withered arm, a blind eye, and a crushed foot — injuries that required sustained care from others to survive. The Xiahe Mandible and Tibetan Altitude Adaptation: A jawbone found in Baishiya Karst Cave on the Tibetan Plateau, dated to at least 160,000 years ago and identified as Denisovan through protein analysis by Fahu Chen, Dongju Zhang, and Jean-Jacques Hublin in 2019, confirmed that Denisovans had already solved the problem of high-altitude survival. Modern Tibetans carry the Denisovan EPAS1 gene variant, confirmed by geneticist Rasmus Nielsen at UC Berkeley. The Stanford Competitive Exclusion Model (2016): A mathematical model from Stanford researchers demonstrated that Neanderthal extinction could be explained not by intellectual inferiority but by numerical disadvantage — repeated waves of modern humans arriving from Africa slowly outcompeted a population that was already small, regional, and resource-constrained. Ghost Population Interbreeding (Teixeira et al., PNAS 2019): As modern humans spread out of Africa, they interbred with at least four distinct archaic human groups. Around two percent of the DNA of everyone outside Africa is Neanderthal in origin. Some populations in Papua New Guinea and Southeast Asia carry several additional percent from Denisovans. Traces of unnamed, unidentified archaic populations survive in living genomes as scattered fragments — peoples we have never named and never found a single bone of. Sources: Pääbo, S. et al. (2010).
