According to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the vessel repeatedly ignored warnings from U.S. forces before being targeted. The tanker reportedly dismissed around 60 verbal warnings issued over a period of time, as well as multiple additional signals of escalation intended to deter its movement. The official stated that U.S. forces also carried out eight “shows of force,” including aerial flyovers and the deployment of flares, to signal the ship to stop. Despite these measures, the vessel allegedly continued its course and ignored two final warnings prior to the strike. Earlier reports from the U.S. military indicated that precision munitions were used to disable the ship’s engine room. The vessel, identified as the Palau-flagged M/T Settebello, was reportedly part of what officials described as a “shadow fleet” involved in transporting Iranian oil in violation of sanctions. Indian authorities confirmed that the incident resulted in the deaths of three Indian sailors, raising concerns and diplomatic sensitivity over the use of force in international waters.
