What difference can female soldiers make on Ukraine's battlefields? | DW News
In Ukraine, fierce fighting continues around the strategic eastern city of Pokrovsk, with Russian forces attempting to take full control of the area. Ukrainian officials have acknowledged that the situation in the Donbas city has become difficult in recent days, but say troops are still fighting there. Kyiv denies its forces are surrounded. It released this footage on Wednesday showing soldiers at the Pokrovsk City Hall. The brutal conditions on Ukraine's frontlines are taking a toll on efforts to recruit new troops to fight against Russia's invasion. But for some, the call to fight for their country's freedom is one they cannot ignore. Sisters Yana and Nastya serve in Ukraine's army, fighting against Russia's invasion of their country. They told DW about how their bond helps them endure the challenges of war and stereotypes about women in combat. Yana, whose nom de guerre is “Demon,” worked in a slaughterhouse after her maternity leave. When her then-husband refused to go to the front, the 23-year-old mother of two volunteered for military service. Since then, she has been serving as a drone pilot alongside her sister. Jana spends two days on duty at the front, and the rest of the time she can be with her children in Pavlohrad.
