Problems with Farming in Nigeria
One of the major constraints farmers face in Nigeria is the inconsistency in input quality. Agro-inputs such as fertilizers, pesticides, growing media, seeds and even basic materials like twine, drip tapes and knapsacks can determine whether a production cycle succeeds or fails. In our case, the cocopeat supplied to us was likely unwashed, despite being sold as properly washed and ready for use. The consequences have already translated into significant financial losses running into hundreds of thousands. This raises a serious question: do we actually have effective regulatory or quality control bodies in Nigeria that test and certify agricultural inputs before they reach farmers? Because right now, the gap between what is sold and what is delivered is too wide. Unfortunately, farmers are the ones paying for it. This is not just about cocopeat. It is about an entire input supply chain that urgently needs accountability, traceability and enforcement. Until that exists, “quality inputs” remains a promise farmers are forced to pay for, but cannot reliably receive.
